Current Situation of Hong Kong HakkaAccording to the result of Hong Kong Government Census about usual language and language ability, it is obviously that most people who born in Hong Kong would use Cantonese as their usual language. In the table below, we cannot see Hakka as a single category under usual language, but it is a kind of ability. Although Hakka comes as the third popular language, the number of people who are able to speak this dialect is far less than the dominant languages, such as Cantonese, Putonghua and English. It is suspected that in the 80.000 people who claimed they speak Hakka, most of them are in an older generation and thus, a few decades later, Hakka may become an endangered language in Hong Kong. Therefore, there is an urge need for us to explore more on this language.
